The Center on Religion & the Professions works to improve the religious literacy of professionals, to help them serve a diverse public.


We help professionals better understand religion in the lives of those they serve by:

•   Supporting ground-breaking research on how religion impacts people and encouraging its use by the appropriate professionals;
•   Creating resources and training to improve the religious literacies among professionals;
•   Developing and testing curriculum in religion for all disciplines;
•   Presenting public forums and other activities to increase the visibility of religion in the public sphere.

Justin Hienz joined the Center in May 2006 as a graduate research assistant. He is currently pursuing master's degrees in journalism and religious studies. His research encompasses the intersection between journalism and religion. Hienz holds a B.A. in religious studies from MU.

Jeremy Littau is a first-year Ph.D. student at the MU School of Journalism. His work focuses on online media, specifically the use of citizen-generated content in publications for the purpose of building communities. He is the co-author of two conference papers that focus on citizen journalism, as well as a chapter in the upcoming book Blogging, Citizenship and the Future of Media. While at MU his studies focus on building better communities for media.

Littau is working on several projects for the Center, including projects that look at religion coverage in the media and public interest in those issues. Littau is a graduate of Biola University, where he earned a B.A. in journalism. Before coming to MU, Littau worked in journalism for eight years at newspapers of varying size. His last job in the newspaper industry was as an editor at the Los Angeles Daily News.

Ji Xiang, a graduate student in the MU School of Journalism, entered the two-year M.A. program in August 2006. Ji joined the Center in September as a graduate research assistant. She previously worked at BusinessWeek magazine's Beijing bureau and Hill & Knowlton public relations agency in Shanghai, China. Ji holds a B.A. degree in television journalism from Beijing Broadcasting Institute. In her work at the Center, she is researching religion and news on the Internet.

Brett Knight is a Discovery Fellow and Walter Williams Scholar at University of Missouri-Columbia. The Discovery Fellowship Program allows students to work with a faculty member on a research project or other scholarly activity appropriate to their major. The Walter Williams Scholars program recognizes the highest-achieving incoming journalism students at MU. In his freshman year, Knight is double-majoring in journalism and economics. His Center work includes writing a paper on the MU Difficult Dialogues program.
