The Center on Religion & the Professions works to improve the religous literacy of professionals, to help them serve a diverse public.


We help professionals better understand religion in the lives of those they serve by:

•   Supporting ground-breaking research on how religion impacts people and encouraging its use by the appropriate professionals;
•   Creating resources and training to improve the religious literacies among professionals;
•   Developing and testing curriculum in religion for all disciplines;
•   Presenting public forums and other activities to increase the visibility of religion in the public sphere.

Guy Adams, professor and associate director of the Truman School of Public Affairs, gave a plenary presentation, "Redefining Ethics in Public Administration: Unmasking Administrative Evil," at the 12th annual Transforming Local Government Conference in Dayton, Ohio, in June 2006.

Clay Anderson, associate professor of clinical medicine, medicine-hematology & oncology in the University of Missouri School of Medicine, presented on "Spirituality and Narrative in Healthcare," at the MU Health Ethics Conference, "Spirituality in Health and Healing," Oct. 12, 2007.

Robert Baum, associate professor of religious studies at the University of Missouri, gave presentations as part of a panel on "Islam and the Media," (2006), sponsored by the MU Muslim Student Organization; and on "Islam and Politics," sponsored by Humanities Iowa, in Keokuk, Iowa.

Robert Baum, associate professor of religious studies at University of Missouri-Columbia, gave six lectures at Hickman High School, Columbia, Mo., on African religions class in World Religions, 2006-07.

Robert Baum, associate professor of religious studies at University of Missouri-Columbia, was part of a panel discussing the documentary film, "Control Room," about Al-Jazeera television, during Islam Awareness Week activities hosted by MU Muslim Students Organization, University of Missouri-Columbia, April 2007.

Suzanne Burgoyne, professor of theater at University of Missouri, and Marilyn Miller, Peggy Placier, Sharon Welch and Lisa Flores. "Interactive Theatre to Awaken Faculty to Classroom Diversity Issues." International Society for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning conference, Washington, DC, Nov. 11, 2006.

James Campbell, professor of family and community medicine at the University of Missouri-Columbia, presented "Exploring the Relationships Between Religion/Spirituality and Physical Health in Primary Care, Cancer, Spinal Cord Injury, Brain Injury, and Stroke Patients" at the North American Primary Care Research Group, Vancouver, B.C., October 2007.

James Campbell, professor of family and community medicine at the University of Missouri-Columbia, gave a lecture on "Religion, Spirituality and Medicine" to second-year medical students and the University of Missouri-Columbia Medical School, March 2007.

Daniel Cohen, visiting assistant professor in religion studies at University of Missouri-Columbia, presented on "College fraternity and sorority membership, religious affiliation, and the separation of Church and State" at the 2007 Academy for Educational Studies conference at Missouri State University, Springfield, Mo., October 2007.

Carl H. Esbeck., professor of the University of Missouri School of Law, led a workshop on "The Dual-Authority of Church and State in the Western Legal Tradition," Sept.15-17, 2006, with lawyers from the religious organization practice group, in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

Carl H. Esbeck, professor of the University of Missouri School of Law, was a conference speaker on "Separation of Church and State: Is the Wall Crumbling?," Aug. 4, 2006, on a panel of the ABA National Convention meeting in Honolulu, under the auspices of the Section of Individual Rights and Responsibilities of the ABA.

Carl H. Esbeck., professor of the University of Missouri School of Law, was a speaker on "Church-State Relations in America: What's At Stake and What's Not," March 8, 2006, at the School of Law, University of St. Louis.

Carl H. Esbeck, professor of the University of Missouri School of Law, was a conference speaker on "Changes and Directions for the Faith-Based Initiative during the 110th Congress," at the Heritage Foundation in Washington, D.C., Dec. 14-15, 2006.

David Fleming, M.D., associate professor of medicine and director of the Center for Health Ethics at the University of Missouri-Columbia School of Medicine, spoke at a "Stem Cell Research in the Heartland" Symposium on the Social, Ethical, Cultural, Legal, and Economic Implications. Life Sciences Center, University of Missouri-Columbia, March 9, 2006.

David Fleming, professor and director of the MU Center for Health Ethics, Health Management and Informatics, in the University of Missouri School of Medicine, was a panelist for "Dying in America: Conversations Before the Crisis," Missouri End of Life Coalition Second Annual Community Campaign, Columbia, Mo., Feb. 8, 2007.

Brick Johnstone, professor and chairman of the Department of Health Psychology at University of Missouri, presented "Spirituality and Health," Missouri Health Sciences Psychology Internship Consortium didactics on April 14, 2006. Columbia, Mo. Johnstone heads the Center on Religion & the Professions' spirituality and health project.

Brick Johnstone, chair of the MU Department of Health Psychology, gave a national presentation on "Spirituality, Religion and Disability" at the American Psychological Association Rehabilitation Psychology Mid-Winter Meeting March 16-18, 2007, in Charlotte, N.C. The theme of the conference was "Spirituality and Health: Current Updates in Research, Teaching, and Clinical Services."

Brick Johnstone, professor and chairman of the Department of Health Psychology at University of Missouri, presented on "The Neuropsychology of Spirituality" at the MU Department of Health Psychology didactic series on May 25, 2007.
